Things I seem to find Entertaining

Todd Levin Rocks. That is all.

Great Little Story
Nothing this interesting has happenned to me for a while. This is one of those ideas you have that "wouldn't it be cool if this worked...", only it worked for Kristin.

I'll just give her a little Cartman salute: Kickass.

You have...LEPROSY
I read Open Letters now and again...this is a good letter. It's an interesting and funny letter from a Canadian living in Micronesia and studying Leprosy.

County by County Map
What a fine example of statistical charting this is. Go see.

oh.my.god
This is so incredibly cheesy. Go visit now so you can join in the laughter.

It helps if, like me, you already don't care for Melanie Griffith, but OH MY GOD!

Cat Story, the third
Pamie again. I think this surpasses the other one. You should read her -- she's also very funny.

Cat Story, the second
Courtesy of Sarah Hayllar, who is funny as hell. I found her via...Jen (not Wade)? Dana? I don't remember. She's on my spy list now, so I'll be keeping up with this one.

I don't think she can complete an entry without discussing poo, but you know, I actually like toilet humor, so what the hell.

Yes, it's a cat story
You may also be aware that I'm not a particular fan of journals wherein people discuss their cats (or children. I have some bizarre exception for dogs). Nonetheless, I've found myself laughing out loud at some pieces written (mostly) from the cat's point of view. The first of three links, it's courtesy of Pamie.

US Needs UN Oversight to maintain democracy
You know I'm not a left-winger. In fact, I'm pretty conservative, but MoJo has a point on this one. I usually find the magazine just insufferable, but this article is spot on.

Senate Passes Elevation of H1-B Quota
OK, this is such a bunch of bullshit. This is a clear cut case of the Senate (at 96-1 no less!) acting in the interest of corporations and not the people.

There's no fucking shortage of workers -- corporations want to drive down wages in the industry. It's that simple. At least the house pretends to want to protect the immigrants from absurd wages and us from being canned and replaced by said immigrants.

Are you underpaid?
It's a big new salary survey for net workers. They also evaluate a lot of other changes in the industry that have occurred in the last year.

traffic nexus of fairfax county
I've been saying that I work at "the nexus of traffic hell", and The Post apparently agrees. I'm on Gallows Rd between 29 and 50, if you're wondering.

(Link courtesy of Fedward. I don't read traditional news on the web except when referred to it by others).

Ben Brown
"Our technology, oh, it was very very solid. It was just everything else that was made of jello."

Ben's comment on the demise of Deepleap. When he writes (infrequently) he's both good and funny.

Remember "Know Your Customer"
"Politicians are making the preposterous claim that you should surrender your privacy rights because of theoretical crimes committed by dictators in countries most of us can't even locate on a map." Basically, those bastards in Washington are trying to resurrect that horrible law that folks fought against last year. They are cloaking it with the word 'International', but they can still spy on domestic accounts. Soon, you'll have to be able to justify every large deposit and withdrawal for the gubmint. Sound like fun?

Train obsessed
Cool story. The guy is obsessed with transit and has been jailed for impersonating NYC transit authorities so he could drive the train. It's wrong, but still...kickass for you, bud.

Why She Hates Being a Girl
You know, sometimes I hate it too. This is a fair run-down of the basic problems we have to deal with every day.

Metafilter Discussion of Sony's Recent Stupidity
I am particularly tickled by chiXy's post (speaking of the VP of Sony): "after he comes down I think I'll mail him a copy of TCP/IP Illustrated. Then I want to watch him cry himself to sleep every night. The only thing I find disturbing, is that idiots like this are getting press and breeding."

Good and Free Astrology
It's a rarity, and I'm sure it will disappear soon. If you want a tantalizing taste of what a real chart reading by a professional would be like, go check out the "free reports".

The "Astro-Twins" link is much more than one you usually get in a celebrity birthday list. Since the site is natively German, the list is compiled of different folks than those directly referenced by U.S. culture.

We live in a police state
And it's gotten to the point where Canadians have the freedom to write about it but U.S. citizens apparently don't. It's an extremely well written article about the protests (nee Riot) at the Democratic Convention in L.A.

CNN Reports More Gubmint Waste

"CNN confirms that independent counsel Robert Ray has empaneled a new grand jury to hear evidence against the president in the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Details soon."

Dear U.S. Gubmint:

Please stop wasting my money. I do not care if the President slept with an intern (who is not just over 18 but over 21). Lots of people cheat on their wives and lie about it, like it or not, and since Hillary is the injured party here, how about letting her deal with it?

Thanks,

Nicole

"Hello, I'm psychotic. Would you like some pie?"
OK, so it cracked me up. But really, she's a good diarist, and you should go check it out.

Lumber Liquidators
Now I want cherry floors, damn it. We don't need any new floors in any of the three houses, so I'll have to save that for a future project.

Malice, 9-August
how do you tell someone you would really like to kiss them, just for the sake of finding out how they kiss, and that you want nothing more whatsoever and everything to return to normalcy after the curiousity is quelled?

What a great quote. I took her off my daily list, and I'm not sure why. I think I thought she was someone else, so I'll be putting her back now.

Fun Internet Quiz
It asks you questions about your beliefs and then tells you what religion you should be. It was exactly right for me, if I were the sort that thought organized religion made any sense at all. They don't actually ask if you think organized religion is a useful thing. Anyway, I found it sort of eerie that my beliefs could be so accurately ascertained.

Funniest Thing Ever
If you're at work and you need to look like you're working, don't listen to this. You'll fall out of your chair laughing and then you'll just be embarrassed.

Wow, Kim and Gus break up on the forum
That's right. You too can witness the break-up of long-time web journaler The Gus and his girlfriend on the 4th anniversary of Gus' journal. See, Gus has this forum that he built and everyone dissects his journal there. His girlfriend is pretty bitter about this, so it's somehow ironic that she would cooperate in using this venue to talk to The Gus about their relationship. Oh, and if you're already a reader of the Gus and you're not viewing the source, you've missed most of the content over the last month or two.

Indian Bans Violent Video Games
It's a wonder that we all survived to reach majority, isn't it?

Junkyard Wars
This show is run by TLC in the U.S. and it's the best idea for a show, like, ever. I didn't really watch it at first because I figured it was really boy oriented, but I got sucked right in to the mini lifting wars last night, and after watching the whole show, I wish that I had thought of it first.

Harry Browne's Abortion Position
From within this: "Given the government's record with the War on Poverty and the War on Drugs, we can assume that a War on Abortion would lead within five years to men having abortions."

You know, it's not that hard to come up with a position I can respect. Why can't anyone do it who's not a libertarian?

Huh? What's a Grindable?

Will someone please explain to me what "grindables" has to do with Taco Bell food? How exactly is one supposed to figure out that the nutritional info is under this mysterious link? Taco Bell may have the worst web site of any fast food company. I sure hope they didn't pay much to have this thing done. It doesn't represent their company or their food, and it's just...inexplicably ugly and illogical in design.

Harry Potter Takes Drugs
Why the hell do people assume kids are stupid and take everything literally? Based on the quote in this piece, the book seems to make drugs sound powerful but dangerous and as something to be taken seriously. What the hell is wrong with that?

Commerce Anyone?
This is really regressive. Mephistos are expensive, and most people looking to buy them are expecting that, so WHAT THE HELL?

H2K orgy
Got this from blorg, but feel the need to share it here so that you too can enjoy it.

The Buzz Stops Here
This is a great fucking article. Of course, he just agrees with everything I already think...but still. It's a good reality check for when the CEO is blowing smoke up your ass.

Sometimes Barney Starts Playing Peekaboo on His Own
Wow, would this freak me out. Not that I'd buy my kid an Barney actimate (I think I'd just want to blow up the thing on the lawn outside of a week), but jeez would this freak me out.

Shelters on the AT
I also found this review of the shelters along the AT in Pennsylvania. Based on the shelters I've seen (about half), it's pretty accurate. Bake Oven Knob and Outerbridge are both dumps (but thank &diety for the piped spring at Outerbridge) and Allentown is a palace.

Caledonia State Park
Speaking of hiking (aren't I always), here's the web page for my favorite place in Pennsylvania last year. The DCNR page mentions that South Mountain is made of rocks. I'll say it is. From where I'm sitting, so is the rest of the Allegheny chain.

1900 House

The parents need to suck it up and get a life, man.

Courtney Does The Math

You know, I really didn't used to like Courtney Love. Somehow, I simply got a bad impression. After seeing The People vs Larry F, I started to respect her.

This little speech blew me away though. I love that she's falling on her own sword for the good of the whole industry. It's amazing.

She also happens to be at least 99.6% right.

Reston Purchase Circle
I think that purchase circles are one of the coolest things the Amazon software does, but I find it a bit creepy that almost everything on the list has to do with work.

Of course, my standard reason for "why living in DC sucks" is that people are work-obsessed, and I guess this bears this out.

For reference, Newton's Telecom Dictionary has been on this list as long as they have had lists. It always amazes me that people outside the Internet industry have no freaking clue that so much of it is in Virginia not California.
